When looking for a rehab center to attend, it can be difficult to know exactly what to look for in these facilities. We’re here to assist you in determining what you should look for and what makes a rehab facility more legitimate. If you or a loved one are looking to attend a drug rehab center, here are some things to look for.
1. Look for a rehab center that has a good reputation and is accredited by a reputable organization
For a rehabilitation center to be accredited, it must follow certain policies, guidelines, and standards of practice and care established by a third-party organization, the addiction and mental health treatment industry, and the state in which the center is located (CARF International, 2022). A treatment facility must go through an extensive process that consists of many evaluations in order to become accredited. This is necessary in order for the facility to meet the particular standards of excellence that have been established for providing care for the client (CARF International 2022). Accreditation proves not only that the individual will receive care of the highest standard and quality, but also that the provider is capable of meeting very high standards of care in addiction care practices. These standards are typically much more comprehensive than what the state typically requires for a facility to become licensed (CARF International, 2022).
2. Make sure the staff is qualified and experienced in treating addiction
Every member of the staff, including counselors, medical and clinical directors, who will be leading group therapy and one-on-one therapy sessions daily, must have their own licenses, credentials, and certifications. In addition to being unlawful, it would also be unethical for a person to assume the corresponding position without the required certifications. Prior to meeting with the medical/center director for a tour of the facility, it would be wise to check their credentials or to ask about them during the tour. The qualifications of the facility’s personnel should be shown in their individual offices or published in a detailed biography/description on the website.
3. Ask about the treatment program – is it tailored to meet your needs?
What distinguishes a good treatment program from a superb one is whether or not they tailor your treatment plan to your specific needs. Every person is unique, and alcohol and drug rehab are not a one-size-fits-all treatment. If the treatment facility can tailor a treatment plan to your specific needs and what specific treatment type(s) you would require while in the rehabilitation center, this is a telltale sign of a high-level treatment center that considers every individual, their specific needs, and the fact that everyone is different and should be cared for uniquely.
