Cannabis, or marijuana is one of the most widely used substances in the United States. While many people use cannabis recreationally, ongoing or heavy use can lead to Cannabis Use Disorder (CUD). At PCI Centers, we recognize that while cannabis is sometimes perceived as harmless, it can affect brain development, mental health, motivation, and daily functioning when use becomes problematic.
Cannabis
When Use Becomes a Disorder
Cannabis Use Disorder is diagnosed when a person experiences persistent cravings, difficulty cutting back, and negative consequences in work, school, or relationships related to cannabis use (American Psychiatric Association, 2013). Symptoms may include:
Using cannabis more often or in larger amounts than intended
Spending significant time obtaining, using, or recovering from use
Needing more cannabis to feel the same effects (tolerance)
Withdrawal symptoms such as irritability, sleep problems, or anxiety
Continuing use despite memory issues, mood changes, or social/occupational problems
Our Treatment Approach to Cannabis
At PCI Centers, our goal is to help clients understand their relationship with cannabis and create healthier patterns:
Comprehensive Assessment – Careful evaluation of cannabis use, mental health, and underlying factors like anxiety, trauma, or stress.
Therapy – Evidence-based approaches such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Motivational Interviewing (MI) help individuals identify triggers, strengthen coping strategies, and reduce reliance on cannabis.
Relapse Prevention – Building skills to manage cravings and stress, along with mindfulness and behavioral techniques for long-term recovery.
Flexible Care Options – Outpatient, IOP, and telehealth services tailored to client needs.
