Understanding Anxiety

At PCI Centers, we understand that anxiety is part of the human experience, but when persistent and overwhelming, it becomes more than everyday stress. Anxiety disorders are marked by excessive worry, physiological tension, and difficulty functioning in work, relationships, or daily life (American Psychiatric Association, 2013; National Institute of Mental Health, 2023).

When Anxiety Becomes a Disorder

Anxiety disorders include generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), social anxiety disorder, panic disorder, and specific phobias. These conditions often involve:

  • Ongoing, uncontrollable worry about multiple areas of life
  • Restlessness, irritability, muscle tension, or sleep disturbance
  • Avoidance of feared situations and impaired concentration (Mayo Clinic, 2023; Cleveland Clinic, 2023)

To meet diagnostic criteria, symptoms typically last at least six months and significantly impair functioning (APA, 2013).

PCI’s Treatment Approach to Anxiety

Evidence-Based Therapies

We specialize in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), which helps clients identify and change unhelpful thought patterns, along with Psychodynamic treatment, Mindfulness-based, and Acceptance & Commitment Therapy.

Medication Management

When clinically appropriate, we coordinate with prescribing providers to incorporate medications such as SSRIs to reduce symptoms and improve functioning.

Whole-Person Care

We also integrate complementary strategies like mindfulness, progressive muscle relaxation, guided imagery, and structured exercise to support resilience and emotional regulation.
