Understanding Depression

At PCI Centers, we know that everyone experiences periods of sadness or low energy. However, when these feelings last for weeks or months and interfere with work, relationships, and daily functioning, it may be more than “feeling down.” This is known clinically as Major Depressive Disorder (MDD), one of the most common mental health conditions we treat.

Depression is not a sign of weakness. It is a legitimate medical condition with biological, psychological, and social factors that all play a role (American Psychiatric Association [APA], 2013).

Common Symptoms of Depression

Symptoms of depression can look different for each person, but often include:

  • Persistent sadness or emptiness
  • Loss of interest in previously enjoyable activities
  • Fatigue or low energy
  • Changes in sleep or appetite
  • Difficulty concentrating or making decisions
  • Feelings of guilt, hopelessness, or worthlessness
  • Thoughts of death or suicide

When five or more of these symptoms are present for at least two weeks, and significantly impact daily life, the criteria for Major Depressive Disorder may be met (APA, 2013).

PCI’s Approach to Treating Depression

At PCI Centers, we provide individualized, evidence-based treatment for depression that goes beyond symptom relief to help restore well-being and resilience.

  • Psychotherapy – Our clinicians primarily use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and a variety of other treatment modalities to treat depressive symptoms.
  • Medication Management – For some individuals, antidepressant medication can play a key role in recovery. Our team coordinates with prescribing providers to ensure medication, when used, is closely monitored and tailored to each client.
  • Holistic Support – We complement therapy with practices such as mindfulness, relaxation training, and structured lifestyle changes to support emotional balance and physical health.
